Wireless Charging

There are so many amazing rehabilitation therapies out there, and I'm obsessed with them all. Ever since Harriet's splint bone fracture and consequent stall rest, I've loved learning about all the different modalities that can promote healthy healing and recovery. One such therapy that is even FDA-approved for healing nonunion fractures is PEMF therapy (Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Field). In humans, it has been proven to promote bone growth, treat soft tissue injuries and wounds, and reduce joint and soft tissue inflammation or swelling. It has since been adapted for use in animals, and its quiet, non-invasive, low-profile delivery system has been very well received by the equine population.

In very simple terms, PEMF therapy stimulates and exercises the cells, sending pulses of energy waves into the area around which the coils are placed. It's been compared to wireless charging of a cell phone, similar to this kind of "induction charging". When the cell "batteries" become tired or depleted due to stress, age, damage, or overuse, PEMF helps to recharge them so that they can better heal any damage or stress. The electromagnetic field can reduce pain and inflammation, improve circulation, accelerate healing, increase blood and tissue oxygenation, and so much more. While this is an amazing tool for injuries, it is also proven to be beneficial for performance recovery, systemic illnesses, chronic issues such as arthritis or soreness, and even digestive issues!

Since her first PEMF session a month or so after her first fracture, Harriet has visibly expressed her contentment while being treated. Yawning, chewing, and stretching while standing relaxed to the point of dozing off is a rare and beautiful sight to see from the NightMare. She has proven to be exceptionally responsive to treatments!

As she often does, Harriet felt the need to prove how dramatically athletic and acrobatic she can be while schooling the day before our most recent event. This, of course, resulted in some severe lower back spasms and a bit of tenderness the following day. With the help of massage, liniment, and two focused PEMF sessions from a friend, we saw a dramatic improvement overnight. While sometimes being perceived as a pseudoscience, PEMF has huge foundations in functionality with quantitative results. Iā€™m very grateful to have so many therapies easily accessible and to have a horse who, while incredibly sensitive and just a little bit extra, responds so well to all our treatment attempts.
